CO12: Neuroimaging and Psychophysiology

The group is a multidisciplinary group led by a Ramón y Cajal researcher and made up of different pre- and post-doctoral researchers and clinical researchers, including psychologists, biologists, specialists in clinical neuroscience, as well as a large group of neurologists and neurosurgeons. The general objective of the group is to study the biological bases and brain mechanisms responsible for pathological symptoms in different neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis or Chronic Migraine, among others. For this, the different researchers use innovative tools and cutting-edge methodologies that include high-density EEG recordings, intracranial recordings in patients, peripheral measurements such as eye-tracking, advanced analysis of structural or functional MRI, as well as various brain stimulation techniques. , including transcranial magnetic stimulation or deep brain stimulation.

Lines of research
  • Human cognition and cognitive decline:
    • - Evaluation through electrophysiological and neuroimaging techniques of the neural bases of cognitive processes (e.g., executive functions, attention); Design of new cognitive tasks.
    • - Study of the brain mechanisms that underlie cognitive function both in the healthy population and in patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders.
    • - Evaluation of brain activity patterns and their relationship with the presence of cognitive impairment and clinical alterations.
    • - Currently working with patients with Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, dementia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and chronic migraine.
  • Brain imaging methods:
    • - EEG and ERP: Advanced use of electrophysiological analysis and techniques; Use of high-density EEG equipment to understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of activation of cortical networks at rest and during the performance of cognitive tasks, both in healthy and pathological populations.
    • - New analysis and methodological solutions for the localization of brain generators through toolboxes such as Analyzer, EEGLAb, SPM12, y Brainstorm.
    • - Analysis of structural (MR) and functional neuroimaging (fMRI) data.
    • - Multimodal fusion and integration of electrophysiological (EEG) and hemodynamic (fMRI) data acquired separately or simultaneously.
    • - Intracranial recordings (icEEG) in humans post-surgery.
    • - Biometric records through "iMotions": automatic recognition of facial emotions, peripheral activity, and eye-tracker.
  • Neuromodulation:
    • - Use of different neuromodulation techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), direct current (tDCS), and static magnetic fields (tSMS), in healthy subjects and with neurological disorders.
    • - Deep brain stimulation (DBS) in neurological and psychiatric patients.
    • - Simultaneous EEG co-recordings during TMS and DBS protocols.
