CO20: Perinatal Brain Damage

The "Perinatal brain damage" group, leaded by Dr Isabel Benavente Fernández and by Simón P. Lubián López, is a multidisciplinary group that includes neonatologists, neurophysiologists, radiologists and psychologists belonging to the Andalusian Health Service. All members work in the clinical-healthcare setting, and 4 of them are doctors of Medicine.

The main goal of this group is studying the neurobiological basis of the neurodevelopmental disorders observed in newborns at high risk of suffering from these disorders. The team focuses on two subpopulations of newborns who present a greater neurological vulnerability: term newborns exposed to perinatal asphyxia who develop hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy and preterm newborns. Different advanced neuroimaging techniques are used, mainly ultrasound (3D brain ultrasound, power-doppler, etc.) and magnetic resonance imaging (DWI, DTI), in order to study the development of different brain structures.

The team studies the association that different biochemical/clinical factors and the socio-economic level have in neurodevelopment.

• Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in the term newborn: Development of a predictive prognostic model based on neuroimaging, clinical and biochemical.
• Neuroimaging in the preterm newborn: Linear measurements by 3D ultrasound in the preterm newborn. Relationship with the prognosis. Comparison with measurements made by MRI. Comparison with fetal means.
• Biomarkers in intraventricular hemorrhage and posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus of prematurity.
• Effect on the central nervous system of perinatal infection by citomegalovirus and ureaplasma urealitycum.
• Murine experimental model of intraventricular hemorrhage: neuroprotective drugs.
