EM15: Health, sport and inflammation

This group is the result of the joint efforts of two institutions, the University of Cádiz and the Andalusian Health Service, to establish a cohesive multidisciplinary research team with experience in the specific field of health, sport and inflammation.

The main investigator, Professor Manuel Rosety Rodríguez, University Professor, has extensive experience in redox metabolism and inflammation research, being the main line of his group PAIDI CTS-671 from the Junta de Andalucía. This group has experience in the design and development of basic research applied to routine clinical practice, for example, exercise-based intervention programs for the enhancement of antioxidant defenses in different populations with increased oxidative effects include psoriasis.

The researchers of each center are experts and have been working together for more than 6 years as a cohesive and integrated group, as a result of which participation in international conferences and indexed publications have been derived..

To this group we incorporate support researchers with extensive experience in carrying out research projects on drug monitoring and measurement of intermediate metabolites in inflammatory processes, experts in comorbidity and systemic consequences of inflammation, as well as experts in research methodology.

• Importance of oxidative damage and proinflammatory status in the pathophysiology of prevalent diseases in our environment: Currently, the role of oxidative damage and proinflammatory status in the pathophysiology of prevalent diseases is accepted. In fact, oxidative and proinflammatory damage markers have been proposed as therapeutic targets on which to act. Likewise, its monitoring could also facilitate the clinical management of these patients.
• Exercise as an adjuvant treatment in the management of oxidative damage and the proinflammatory state: There is increasing evidence on the usefulness of physical exercise against oxidative damage and proinflammatory status. In more detail, aerobic exercise was able to improve oxidative damage, increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. At the same time, exercise managed to significantly decrease the levels of proinflammatory cytokines and acute phase reactants. Future studies in which exercise-based intervention programs designed specifically for pathologies prevalent in our environment are applied are still necessary. In this way, specifying the type of exercise, duration of the program, number of sessions/week, duration and structure of each session, intensity of work, etc., will facilitate its reproducibility in any healthcare environment.
