EM25: GIRESMO (Research Group for the Reduction of Stigma in Mental Health)

Research group aimed at developing strategies to reduce stigma towards people with mental health problems. Its preferred fields of action are: the adolescent population in the school environment, undergraduate students in health disciplines (medicine, psychology, nursing) and the professionals who work within the health system. An additional area of interest is the validation of instruments for the objectification of stigma in Spanish.

Lines of research
  • Development of strategies to reduce stigma towards people with mental illness in the school context: the “Lo Hablamos” program:
    • The objective of this line of research is to develop action programs in the school context, aimed at reducing prejudices and discriminatory attitudes towards people with emotional problems. The performances are carried out with the pre-adolescent population (14-16 years old) since it is the critical moment where adult stereotypes begin to crystallize.
      • - Work carried out within this line of research:
        • Piloting of the “Lo Hablamos” program with 315 students. Article submitted for publication.
        • Efficacy study of the “Lo Hablamos” program (419 students). Work in data analysis phase.
      • - Future lines of action:
        • Differential efficacy study of the standard versus extended “Lo Hablamos” program. To be carried out in the 2018-19 school year.
  • Development of strategies to reduce stigma towards people with mental illness in medical students project INDIGO READ (The Effectiveness of Responding to Experienced and Anticipated Discrimination (READ) training for medical students”):
    • The INDIGO-READ project is a multicentre study coordinated by Professor Grahan Thornicroff of King's College London.
      • - Work carried out within this line of research:
        • Effectiveness of the application of the INIDIGO-READ program to reduce stigma towards people with mental illness in medical students (original study). Study completed in data analysis phase.
        • Effectiveness of the application of the INIDIGO-READ program to reduce stigma towards people with mental illness in psychology students (extended study). Study completed in data analysis phase.
        • Effectiveness of the application of the INIDIGO-READ program to reduce stigma towards people with mental illness in nursing students (extended study). Study completed in data analysis phase.
      • - Future lines of action:
        • Application of the INDIGO program to reduce stigma towards people with mental illness among Primary Care health professionals.
  • Design and validation of instruments for the objectification of stigma towards people with mental illness in the adolescent population:
    • In this line, the objective is to be able to delimit a body of evaluation instruments, validated and adapted to the characteristics of this population that allow the objective evaluation of stigmatizing attitudes towards people with emotional problems.
      • - Studies completed:
        • Validation and adaptation of the Peer Mental Health Stigmatization Scale (PMHSS-24). Work completed in the writing phase of the article.
      • - Future lines of action:
        • Validation and adaptation of the Adolescent Attitude Towards Serious Mental Illness (ATSM-21).
