CO1: INMOX (Inflammation, Nutrition, Metabolism and Oxidative Stress)

The members of this research group are distributed between the IN-CO1 group belonging to the Biomedical Research and Innovation Institute of Cadiz (INiBICA) and the CTS-927 group belonging to the Andalusian Research Plan (PAIDI). This mixed group is made up of a healthcare team composed of specialist physicians from the paediatrics and physiotherapy departments, nurses and a team specialized in biomedical research from the Research Unit of the University Hospital "Puerta del Mar" (Biochemists and Biologists) and the Department of Biomedicine, Biotechnology and Public Health (Area of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) of the University of Cadiz. Biomedical researches focus on developing novel diagnostic methods and therapeutic strategies for the management and prevention of obesity, diabetes and their related complications, from foetal stage to adulthood. The group's expertise in the analysis of oxidative stress, antioxidant response and energy metabolism is used to identify biomarkers of risk for associated complications and inflammatory diseases.

Lines of research
  1. Mechanisms of diet-induced oxidative and inflammatory damage in childhood obesity and other chronic inflammatory diseases (e.g., cystic fibrosis).
  2. Strategies for preserving beta cell function caused by cytotoxic, metabolic and oxidative stress in type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  3. Study of the role of the placenta in complicated pregnancies with diabetes and/or gestational obesity caused by the action of factors such as hyperglycaemia, pro-inflammatory damage, oxidative and nitrosative stress.
  4. In vivo antioxidant activity of food. Development of biochemical techniques for the in vivo analysis of real antioxidant activity of foods after their ingestion. This line of work is proposed as a service to companies in the agri-food sector interested in checking whether their products have a real antioxidant response in healthy adult humans. "NutrOX Testing" Project.
