CO15: Population and Health: Determinants and Interventions

This research group is the result of merging three previous research groups on Public Health and Epidemiology (two of these groups mainly comprised of researchers from the University of Cadiz and a third group of researchers from the Andalusian Public Health System). This group develops 4 lines of research related to social and demographic determinants, food and nutrition, prevention and surveillance of communicable and non-communicable diseases, with special emphasis on mental health.

Lines of research
  • Epidemiology of food and nutrition. Determinants of eating behaviour. Food and health inequalities. Health promotion in food and nutrition. Applicability and impact of the Mediterranean diet. Obesity and eating disorders. Antioxidants, complementary food, nutritional supplements. Preventive food measures against different pathologies. Food and gastronomy.
  • Biostatistics and epidemiology. Social determinants and mental health. Research focuses on: methodological issues (study of validity and reliability of measurement instruments; development of information systems and indicators; research design and data analysis), mental health epidemiology (disease distribution, evaluation of care services in Europe), population studies of morbidity and mortality.
  • Social determinants and health inequalities. The study of the social determinants of health, both at individual and contextual level, allows to understand their impact on the distribution of diseases such as diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease or suicides. Knowledge of the geographical distribution of social inequalities in health has allowed to identify areas at high risk of morbidity and mortality. The results obtained have led to interventions aimed to reduce geographical and gender inequalities, for which social services and the public health services have cooperated. The evaluation of the consequences of the economic crisis on the health of the population of Andalusia (mortality, mental health) and on the equity of access to health services is an important part of the activities of this line of research.
  • Prevention and health promotion. Research activities have been developed in various areas of public health, especially: occupational diseases and risks, surveillance of communicable and non-communicable diseases, outbreak studies, smoking interventions, identification of health assets and early detection of breast cancer.
