CO19: Psychological Well-being in Risk and Protective Contexts

Multidisciplinary group with researchers and professionals in the field of psychology (Evolutionary and Educational Psychology, Methodology of Behavioral Sciences, and Personality, Evaluation and Psychological Treatment) and family medicine. The work of our group is aimed at identifying psychosocial factors throughout the life cycle (mainly, the first three decades of life) associated with the psychological well-being and mental health of vulnerable, at-risk and protected groups, and developing intervention programs ( both preventive and promotional) for healthy development and adjustment. Our field of research also covers the study and promotion of healthy sexuality, especially in vulnerable groups. Among the publications, the adaptations and validations of psychological evaluation instruments related to the group's research objectives stand out.

The group has extensive research experience in the evaluation of evolutionary development, and in the analysis of adjustment, mental health and psychological well-being during childhood and adolescence, especially in the family and educational environment, and in contexts of risk and protection.

Regarding the transfer of the results of our research, we are specialists in the development of intervention programs for the promotion and improvement of health and psychological well-being in family, school and health contexts. We also have experience in evaluating family and school intervention programs aimed at vulnerable groups.

Lines of research
  • Adjustment and psychological well-being of children and adolescents in families at psychosocial risk and protection. This line is supported by research work for two decades. Currently, the longitudinal follow-up of a sample of adoptees, which began in 1995 (n=394), has just been completed (Retos de Investigación R&D project). Important results, published in JCR articles, books and congresses, are making it possible to identify risk factors and factors that promote well-being, as well as to know the possibilities of recovery of human development after early adverse experiences. This line has given rise to many knowledge transfer projects (adopter selection criteria, assessment manuals, training programs) throughout the Spanish state. In this line, research has also been carried out through an R&D Agreement with the Andalusian Public Administration in relation to the psychological adjustment of adolescents in residential care in the province of Cádiz. A doctoral thesis is being carried out on the psychological well-being of adult adoptees.
  • Healthy sexuality. In this line, work has been carried out fundamentally on the effects of the consumption of addictive substances on the sexual response, both in men who consume substances and in women. A recent project works on sexual health in women during pregnancy and the puerperium. Several articles have been published in JCR magazines, a manual for the treatment of sexuality in addictions, in addition several works have been presented to national and international congresses. A doctoral thesis has recently been defended, and there is another in progress that studies the relationship between sexual dysfunctions and personality disorders.
  • Promotion of the development and prevention of risk behaviors in educational contexts. In this line, issues related to the prevention and promotion of development in school contexts are worked on. Themes related to learning processes, the analysis of schools and their management and direction processes are worked on, as well as the psychological well-being and mental health of students. A 4-year longitudinal project has been carried out, with more than 800 adolescents from the province of Cádiz, which is making it possible to identify psychosocial factors involved in the future expectations of adolescents from different family and social contexts. Research is currently being carried out in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen on motivation and learning strategies in the university context, which began in 2017. The study consists of validating the motivation and critical thinking scales of the MSLQ instrument with a sample of (N=553) students belonging to the psychology degrees of students from two Spanish universities and the University of Copenhagen. Recently, a doctoral thesis on the future expectations of adolescents in the province of Cádiz has been defended and several impact articles have been published. Currently, two doctoral theses are in process whose theme is framed in this line. One of them is evaluating the impact of a health/educational program on the prevention of risk behaviors in schools in vulnerable contexts in Chile, and another deals with psycho-pedagogical care for learning difficulties in depressed educational contexts in Argentina.
