CO19: Psychological Well-being in Risk and Protective Contexts

This multidisciplinary research group includes researchers and professionals from the field of psychology (Evolutionary and Educational Psychology, Methodology of Behavioural Sciences, and Personality, Evaluation and Psychological Treatment) and family medicine. The group's work is aimed at identifying psychosocial factors throughout the life cycle (mainly the first three decades of life) associated with the psychological well-being and mental health of vulnerable groups at risk and under protection, and at developing (both preventive and promotional) intervention programmes for healthy development. The group's field of research also covers the study and promotion of healthy sexuality, especially in vulnerable groups. Publications include adaptations and validations of psychological assessment instruments related to the group's research objectives.

This research group has extensive research experience in developmental assessment, and in the analysis of psychological adjustment, mental health and well-being during childhood and adolescence, especially in family and educational settings, both in risk and protective contexts.

Regarding the transfer of their research results, the group is specialist in developing intervention programmes for the promotion and improvement of health and psychological well-being in family, school and health settings. This research group also is experienced in the assessment of family and school intervention programs aimed at vulnerable groups.

Lines of research
  1. Psychological adjustment and well-being of children and adolescents in families in psychosocial risk and protective contexts. This line is backed by research work over two decades. At present, the longitudinal monitoring of a sample of adopted persons, started in 1995 (n=394), has just been completed ("Retos Investigación" R&D project). Important results, published in JCR articles, books and congresses, are allowing to identify risk factors and welfare promoting factors, as well as to understand the potential for recovery of human development after early adverse experiences. This line of research has given rise to many knowledge transfer works (adopter selection criteria, assessment manuals, training programs) throughout Spain. Within this line, a research has also been carried out by means of an R+D Agreement with the Andalusian Government in relation to the psychological adjustment of adolescents in residential care in the province of Cadiz. A doctoral thesis on the psychological well-being of adopted adults is in progress.
  2. Healthy sexuality. In this line, work has been carried out mainly on the effects of the consumption of addictive substances on the sexual response, both in male and female substance abusers. A recent project is working on sexual health in women during pregnancy and postpartum period. This group has published several articles in JCR journals, as well as a manual on how to address sexuality in cases of addiction. Moreover, several papers have been presented at national and international congresses. A doctoral thesis has recently been defended, and there is another one in progress that studies the relationship between sexual dysfunctions and personality disorders.
  3. Promotion of the development and prevention of risk behaviours in educational settings. Within this line of research, the team works on issues related to the prevention and promotion of development in school contexts. The research group works on topics related to learning processes, analysis of schools and their management and direction processes, as well as the psychological well-being and mental health of students. A four-year longitudinal project has been carried out with over 800 adolescents from the province of Cadiz, which allows to identify psychosocial factors involved in future expectations of adolescents from different family and social contexts. A research started in 2017 is currently being conducted in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen on motivation and learning strategies in the university context. This study focuses on the validation of the motivation scale and critical thinking scale of the MSLQ instrument, using a sample of (N=553) students belonging to psychology degrees from two Spanish universities and the University of Copenhagen. Recently, a doctoral thesis on the future expectations of adolescents in the province of Cadiz was defended, from which several articles of impact were published. Currently, there are two doctoral theses in process whose subject matter falls within this line of research: one thesis is evaluating the impact of a health/educational programme on the prevention of risk behaviours in schools in vulnerable contexts in Chile, and the other thesis deals with the psycho-pedagogical support for children with learning difficulties in depressed educational contexts in Argentina.
