EM2: MathMed
The group is made up of a multidisciplinary team and they have extensive experience in Biomathematics (mathematical models in cancer, resistance, diabetes and other pathologies). Their work and studies focus on the development of mathematical models and tools for the design of new therapies and/or or the optimization of others already existing in the treatment of tumors of the central nervous system, lungs and leukemias. The team collaborates with the MôLAB (Mathematical Oncology Laboratory) Research Group of the University of Castilla La-Mancha, a pioneer in this field.
Dr. Cristina Blázquez, graduate in medicine and surgery (Hematology and Hemotherapy Specialty). She has completed an intensive course on Acute Leukemias at the MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, Texas). She has been in charge of Pediatric Hematology at the Hospital de Jerez for more than 10 years.
Juan Francisco Rodríguez, a biologist specializing in immunology, has carried out studies on immunological markers by flow cytometry. He has extensive experience in the handling and processing of biological samples, as well as in the identification of different leukocyte populations by flow cytometry.
Salvador Chulián graduated in Mathematics, with a Master's in Mathematical Research. With experience in mathematical and biomathematical oncology, he is a researcher at the University of Cádiz for the design of data-based biomarkers and evolutionary models of tumor dynamics. Álvaro Martínez is a graduate in Physics with a Master's in Applied Mathematics, a researcher at the University of Cádiz for the development of leukemia models.
The main researcher of the team is a doctor in Mathematics. She has received an Extraordinary Doctorate in Science Award for her thesis “Analysis of Mathematical Models of Tumor Growth”. She has extensive experience in the field of Mathematical Oncology and has an excellent track record of international collaboration. She participates in an international project (Therapy Optimization in Glioblastoma) funded by the James S. Mc. Donnel Foundation (USA).

- Research in biomedical problems, related to hematology, tumors, resistance to treatments and diabetes (related to the glycation kinetics of hemoglobin in blood).
- The objective of this group is to use mathematical tools to obtain results of applicability in Onco-Hematology and diabetes. We will develop several mathematical models that describe the dynamics of different types of blood cancer and their response to treatment. We will validate them using data from the integrated diagnosis of affected patients as well as data from experimental models, and use them to design optimized therapeutic strategies. In the case of diabetes, we will work on the development of a mathematical model that describes the glycation process of hemoglobin. We will look for new alternative markers of interest to identify possible pathologies related to diabetes and to monitor the evolution of the disease.
- From the mathematical point of view, our methodology will combine the use and study of ordinary differential equations and partial derivatives, numerical simulation, data analysis techniques, statistical tools and optimization methods.
