EM4: Inflammation and metabolism during aging

Aging is the main risk factor for metabolic, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. During this natural process, many of the alterations that take place at the human body are associated with the progressive deterioration of various metabolic pathways. Those are related to body composition, insulin resistance, mitochondrial dysfunction, autophagy, and inflammatory response. Over the past few years, has been demonstrated that chronic low-grade inflammation leads age-associated functional impairment through cellular senescence recrudescence, and that inflammation inhibition can provide health benefits. Our group focuses on elucidating the mechanisms and implications of inflammasome complexes during the aging process, as well as the diseases associated with it. Our main objective is to elucidate the mechanism by which inflammasomes accelerate aging and how their modulation could show anti-aging therapies to achieve a healthier aging.

Moreover, we study the role of inflammasomes in both pathological (progeroride syndromes) and biological models of accelerated aging in those tissues with a faster ageing associated such as the ovaries.
