Group of physicians from different medical specialties from the Universities of Puerto Real and Jerez de la Frontera, all with concerns in the field of cancer research. The different lines of research are each one of them, led by a researcher, according to the discipline. At the same time, we have the participation of Internal Physicians and Residents, who carry out healthcare and research activities and are attached to different lines of research, not only developing research, but some of whom are doing their doctoral theses.

• MECHANISMS OF RESISTANCE TO ONCOLOGICAL DRUGS: We have delved into some new aspects of the MDR1 system and we are investigating the expression of LRP and MRP in cell lines and in biopsies, to catalog tumors. We justify our line of research by the fact that much of the failure in cancer treatment is the existence of resistance to chemotherapy, a fact that causes our disappointment at the care level. Since the end of the year 2000, we are constituting our DNAteca. We believe that it is a line of great importance, with very rapid clinical applicability. For some years we have been studying a mathematical modeling of this problem, with the collaboration of another Research Group (FQM-201 Theory of Bifurcations and Dynamic Systems). The care activity that we carry out allows us to design studies and investigations with great clinical applicability, since we witness the failure of chemotherapy in many patients and in others, despite having the same tumor and the same stage, however, they survive.
• CARCINOGENESIS: Anything (“carcinogenic”) that damages the genes in our cells can cause cancer. But for the cell to become cancerous (“cancerous transformation”) there must be damage to several cancer-causing genes in the same cell. In other words, the altered genes must be part of characteristic processes, or traces, inherent to the formation of cancer itself: cell proliferation, resistance to cell death and immortality, blood vessel formation, dissemination capacity, energy reprogramming, and evasion. to the immune system. Because each of these processes is enormously complex, with the participation of many mediators that interact with each other, the same disease can be achieved through very different mutations. In reality, this great variation means that they are different diseases grouped under the same name. The importance of this diversity we are getting to know better and better. Thus, for example, under the term breast cancer we group patients whose disease expresses different combinations of molecular markers that require different treatments. It has already been pointed out that half of the tumors occur as a consequence of smoking, obesity, alcohol and a sedentary lifestyle, factors that are absolutely avoidable. We know of a long list of factors that increase the risk of developing cancer, but many patients who develop it have not been exposed to known carcinogens. The identification of the causes of cancer has been carried out mainly through population studies of geographic incidence of cancer, and lifestyle, together with studies of exposure in animals and cells. It has already been noted that a long period of time is normally required to complete the stages of carcinogenesis, with decades typically elapsed from exposure to the carcinogen to clinical onset of cancer. However, the effect of carcinogens will be greater and earlier when exposure to other carcinogens is added, and more so when intrinsic risk factors coexist, due to possible inherited mutations. The accumulation of genetic lesions over the years causes the probability of suffering from cancer to increase significantly with age. In fact, the increase in life expectancy, population aging, is the reason for the enormous increase in the incidence of cancer in our society.
• CARDOVASCULAR PATHOPHYSIOLOGY: There are approximately 15.5 million cancer survivors. More than 40% of those patients will develop a cardiovascular disease (CVD). This occurs, on the one hand, due to the increasing age of the patients, who will present CVRF and because some antineoplastic drugs, together with XRX, can cause cardiac damage, but we cannot forget other emerging drugs, such as immunotherapy. We need research in the field of cardio-oncology, to avoid the deterioration of cardiac and vascular function, which can lead to reduced survival from cancer. We consider biomarkers of cardiovascular damage, improvement of current treatments and those to come, as well as improvement of imaging methods. In summary, clinical-physiological research promotes a continuous development of new diagnostic procedures that, applied to the evaluation of those patients, will benefit them.
