The Principal Investigator, Dr. Isabel Benavente Fernández, together with Dr. Simón Lubián López and Dr. Manuel Lubián Gutiérrez, who are part of the INiBICA CO20 Perinatal Brain Damage group at Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar in Cádiz obtained funding for a Neuropediatrics Research Project with the project: "Predictive model, based on multimodal neonatal neuroimaging of behavioral development at school age in very low birth weight premature infants." The aim is to promote the development of knowledge in Spain in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, child and adolescent neuroscience, and neuropediatrics by supporting original Projects .
The main objective of this research is to evaluate the capacity of multimodal neuroimaging, by quantifying the volume of different brain structures and their growth assessed using 3D ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, and analyzing the microstructure of white matter assessed by DTI, to predict, together with various perinatal and socio-familial factors, the behavioral development of preterm infants with very low birth weight.
This could open the door to the design of strategies focused on children and their families that could promote proper neurodevelopment and reduce frequent behavioral problems in this population.
