The INiBICA Biobank Unit is defined as one of the research support platforms whose mission is to act as a link between collecting physicians, researchers and patients who donate biological samples for biomedical research purposes, so that this interaction takes place under the current legal conditions and with the appropriate ethical guarantees. This Unit is part of the Biobank of the Andalusian Public Health System (SSPA), as a provincial node of this Biobank.
The SSPA Biobank is an initiative of the Ministry of Health and Families of the Regional Government of Andalusia. Under Decree 1/2013 of January 8, 2013, the SSPA Biobank was created and configured as a "Network Biobank", with a common ethical framework, a single organizational structure and a decentralized activity, integrating research biobanks, tissue banks for therapeutic purposes, transfusion medicine centers and SSPA spaces for the collection, treatment, conservation and management of human biological samples and their associated information. The Biobank is configured in 2 areas, one for care and the other for research. It is a biobank authorized to operate for biomedical research purposes and treatment of biological samples of human origin, with registration number B.0000505 (HUPM) in the National Register of Biobanks (ISCIII), according to the provisions of RD 1716/2011.
The centers that currently make up the INiBICA Biobank in the province of Cádiz are:
- HUPM Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar (headquarters of the provincial Biobank Unit).
- HUPR, University Hospital of Puerto Real.
- HJerez, University Hospital of Jerez de la Frontera.
- CTTC, Transfusion, Tissue and Cell Center of the province of Cádiz.
- HLínea, Hospital at La Línea de la Concepción.
The human resources dedicated to the Research Area of the INiBICA Biobank are:
- A senior technician (Biotechnologist) at the node of HUPM.
- A laboratory technician specialist at the node of HUPR.
The other centers (HJerez, CTTC, HLínea), perform biobank work in the collection and archiving of samples with the healthcare resources available in the Anatomic Pathology Unit (HJerez and HLínea) or in the CTTC.
The main objective of the INiBICA Biobank is to improve the quality and quantity of donations for the SSPA Biobank, developing in our node an Andalusian reference center for the Registry of Sample Donors for Biomedical Research (RDMI) and Digital Biobank.
The results achieved to date have been satisfactory, since the INiBICA node in the province of Cádiz accounts for 10% of all the activity of the Biobank of the SSPA in the number of parent samples registered.
