BIOBANK
The INiBICA Biobank Unit is defined as one of the research support platforms whose mission is to serve as a link between physicians who collect samples, researchers, and patients who donate biological samples for biomedical research, ensuring that this interaction takes place in accordance with current legal requirements and with appropriate ethical safeguards. This Unit is part of the Andalusian Public Health System (SSPA) Biobank, serving as a provincial node of this Biobank.
The SSPA Biobank is an initiative of the Department of Health and Families of the Regional Government of Andalusia. Pursuant to Decree 1/2013, dated January 8, the SSPA Biobank was established and organized as a “Networked Biobank,” featuring a common ethical framework, a single organizational structure, and decentralized operations, integrating research biobanks, tissue banks for therapeutic purposes, transfusion medicine centers, and SSPA facilities dedicated to the collection, processing, preservation, and management of human biological samples and their associated information. The Biobank is organized into two areas: one for patient care and the other for research. It is a biobank authorized to operate for the purposes of biomedical research and the processing of biological samples of human origin, with registration number B.0000505 (HUPM) in the National Biobank Registry (ISCIII), in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 1716/2011.
The Andalusian Public Foundation for Progress and Health, through the Biobank of the Andalusian Public Health System, has a quality management system certified in accordance with the ISO 9001:2015 standard, with AENOR (ER-0074/2014) and IQNET (ER-0074/2014) certificates, valid without interruption from February 11, 2026, through February 11, 2029.
The centers that currently actively participate in the INiBICA Biobank in the province of Cádiz are:
- HUPM, Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar (headquarters of the Provincial Biobank Unit).
- HUPR, Puerto Real University Hospital.
- HJerez, University Hospital of Jerez de la Frontera.
- CTTC, Center for Blood, Tissue, and Cell Transfusion in the province of Cádiz.
The human resources assigned to the Research Division of the INiBICA Biobank are:
- A senior specialist technician (biologist) at the HUPM node.
- A senior specialist technician (Biochemistry) at the node of the HUJ.
The other centers (HJerez, CTTC, HUPR) carry out biobanking activities—collecting and archiving samples—using the healthcare resources available at the Department of Pathology (HJerez and HUPR), the Department of Clinical Pharmacology (HUPR), or the CTTC.
The results achieved to date have been satisfactory, as the INiBICA node in the province of Cádiz accounts for 10% of the SSPA Biobank’s total activity in terms of the number of parent samples registered.

The portfolio of services we offer is organized into 4 main categories:
- Provision of human samples for biomedical research and clinical data in compliance with current laws, selectable according to the clinical and diagnostic criteria specified by the researcher.
- Processing for the preparation of biological samples in accordance with the procedures and technical requirements commonly used by researchers in their Projects.
- A facility for the storage of biological samples, equipped with the infrastructure and controls necessary to ensure their integrity, security, and traceability.
- Technical, scientific, and ethical guidance regarding the collection, storage, and management of human samples in biomedical research.
The equipment available to the INiBICA Biobank for carrying out its functions is as follows:
- -80°C Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer with CO2 Cartridge and Telephone Alarm System.
- Histobath.
- Paraffin block manufacturer.
- Optical microscope.
- Extraction hood on a carving table.
- Centrifuges.
- Computer and label printer for tubes and solid samples.
