CO1: INMOX (Inflammation, Nutrition, Metabolism and Oxidative Stress)

Our research focuses primarily on identifying novel diagnostic methods and therapeutic strategies whose primary goal is to treat and prevent obesity, diabetes, and their complications from the prenatal stage through adulthood, as well as on the influence of nutrition on inflammation and oxidative stress. We are a multidisciplinary group with a strong translational focus, bridging the gap from the research laboratory to the patient and society as a whole.

The members of the “ Team ” research group are distributed between the IN-CO1 group at the Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation (INiBICA) at the University of Granada ( Cádiz ) and the CTS-927 group at the University of Granada ( Plan Andaluz de Investigación ) (PAIDI), as part of a multidisciplinary team comprising a healthcare-focused research group ( Team ) made up of medical specialists in pediatrics and physical therapy, nurses, and a biomedical research specialist ( Team ) from the Research Unit at the University of Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar (biochemists and biologists) and the Department of Biomedicine, Biotechnology, and Public Health (Division of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) at the University of Cádiz. Biomedical research focuses on developing novel diagnostic methods and therapeutic strategies for the management and prevention of obesity, diabetes, and their complications, from the prenatal stage through adulthood. The group’s expertise in the analysis of oxidative stress, antioxidant response, and energy metabolism is applied to the identification of biomarkers for the risk of associated complications and inflammatory diseases.

Lines of research
  • Line 1: In vivo antioxidant activity of foods. Development of biochemical techniques for the in vivo analysis of the actual antioxidant activity of foods following ingestion. This line of research is intended as a service to companies in the agri-food sector interested in clinically certifying the actual antioxidant activity in people who consume these foods. Project: NutrOX Testing.
  • Line 2: Mechanisms and markers of diet-induced oxidative and inflammatory damage in childhood obesity, type 1 diabetes, and cystic fibrosis.
