CO15: Population and Health: Determinants and Interventions

The group was formed through the merger of three previous research groups in Public Health and Epidemiology, two of which were primarily c Composition d of researchers from the UCA and the third of researchers from the SSPA. The group pursues four main lines of research related to social and demographic determinants, diet and nutrition, and the prevention and surveillance of communicable and noncommunicable diseases, with a special emphasis on mental health.

Lines of research
  • Line 1: Epidemiology of Diet and Nutrition. Determinants of eating behavior. Diet and health inequalities. Health promotion in diet and nutrition. Applicability and impact of the Mediterranean diet. Obesity and eating disorders. Antioxidants, complementary foods, and nutritional supplements. Dietary preventive measures against various diseases. Food and gastronomy.
  • Line 2: Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Social Determinants and Mental Health. Research focuses on: methodological issues (studying the validity and reliability of measurement instruments; developing information systems and indicators; research design and data analysis), mental health epidemiology (distribution of mental disorders, evaluation of mental health care services in Europe), and population-based studies of morbidity and mortality.
  • Line 3: Social determinants and health inequalities. The study of social determinants of health—both individual and contextual—has allowed us to understand their impact on the distribution of diseases such as diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, and suicide. Knowledge about the geographic distribution of social inequalities in health has facilitated the identification of areas at high risk for morbidity and mortality. The results obtained have led to interventions aimed at reducing regional and gender inequalities, involving collaboration between healthcare and public health services. Assessing the consequences of the economic crisis on the health of the population of Andalusia (mortality, mental health) and on equity in access to health services is a key part of the research activity in this line.
  • Line 4: Prevention and Health Promotion. Research activities have been conducted in various areas of public health, particularly occupational diseases and risks, surveillance of communicable and noncommunicable diseases, outbreak investigations, tobacco control interventions, identification of health assets, and early detection of breast cancer.
