CO17: Diabetes Mellitus – Autoimmunity and Chronic Complications: Pathological, Clinical, and Therapeutic Implications
This group conducts robust, multidisciplinary research focused on diabetes mellitus, its autoimmune basis, its chronic complications, and its clinical implications throughout the life course. It integrates basic, translational, and applied research in areas such as type 1 diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes, diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy, as well as diabetic foot and the risk of amputation. It also stands out for its collaboration with professionals from the Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar , Cádiz , and the Biomedical Research Foundation Cádiz, which strengthens its capacity to translate research into clinical practice.
In particular, the group maintains research lines that are especially relevant to gestational diabetes mellitus, which is viewed not only as a complication of pregnancy but also as a model for predicting type 2 diabetes mellitus and other metabolic and cardiovascular complications. It also participates in collaborative projects in the field of marine resources through Projects , focusing on the medical applications of native macroalgae, including Cladosiphon sp.

- Line 1: Diabetes and Autoimmunity. Study of the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) with a focus on beta cells in an animal model (BB rats) and evaluation of different treatment models (continuous insulin infusion systems and multiple daily injections). Assessment of preventive strategies and predictive parameters (autoimmunity).
- Line 2: Diabetes Mellitus and Pregnancy. The role of proinflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of gestational diabetes. Predictive variables for metabolic syndrome and the risk of cardiovascular disease. The role of the placenta in the underlying pathogenic mechanisms. Analysis of the relationship between periodontal disease and gestational diabetes.
- Line 3: Diabetic Retinopathy. Pathogenic mechanisms of diabetic retinopathy in animal models and humans. Molecular biology and biochemistry of the mechanisms that modulate the process. Incidence of retinopathy in patients with T1DM. Population-based screening models using digital retinography.
- Line 4: Diabetic nephropathy. Study of the processes that trigger kidney disease associated with diabetes mellitus in animal models and humans. Molecular biology and biochemistry of the mechanisms that modulate this process.
- Line 5: Diabetic foot and risk of amputation. Characterization of the population undergoing amputations due to diabetic foot. Census analyses. Study of socioeconomic variables. Qualitative analyses based on interviews with patients and healthcare professionals.
