CO2: Immunopathologies, rheumatic inflammatory diseases and biomarkers in neoplastic processes
Our group stems from the close and long-standing collaboration between basic and clinical researchers in the field of immunology and rheumatology. Several members of the group have a long tradition of studying B lymphocyte populations and their differentiation into plasma cells (PCs), which are responsible for antibody production and therefore humoral immunity. The process of maturation from B lymphocytes to PC cells involves a series of phases in which the physiological and phenotypic characteristics of PC cells gradually change until they reach final maturity. At this stage, in which PC cells produce high-affinity antibodies against a specific antigen, they are directed and selected in final host tissues, such as bone marrow, where these cells, although they lose their ability to proliferate, acquire a long-lived status. In addition to studying the characteristics of the different phases of B lymphocytes and PCs in humans, our group also studies the transcriptional regulation of a transcription factor called PRDM1, which is key in this cell differentiation process. The expression of alternative isoforms of PRDM1 has been found to be overexpressed in multiple myeloma, the tumor counterpart of PCs.
On the other hand, our group's objective is to study systemic autoimmune diseases, primarily but not exclusively rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Although the pathophysiological mechanisms of autoimmune diseases are unknown, they present various autoantibodies as markers of the disease. Our group seeks to identify new cellular and/or molecular biomarkers that will allow us to predict and mitigate disease flare-ups through the development and design of potential new therapies. The populations of B lymphocytes and autoreactive CPs present in these patients, in which, as mentioned above, the group has extensive experience, seem to be a good starting point for research into the development of therapies that eliminate or reduce the adverse effects of these diseases.

Lines of research
- Line 1: B lymphocytes and their differentiation into plasma cells. Study of the phenotypic characteristics and transcriptional factors that determine the differentiation of B lymphocytes into plasma cells in different tissues and degrees of maturation. Transcription factors that may be involved in the development and maintenance of lymphomas and/or myelomas.
- Line 2: Protein machinery involved in exocytosis or cell secretion. We characterize proteins that may be key in the mechanism of antibody secretion by plasma cells. The proteins that make up the cell secretion machinery are involved in any cell secretion process, ranging from exosomes to interleukins.
- Line 3: B lymphocytes and autoreactive plasma cells. We study these cell populations in patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases, primarily systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. Phenotypic and molecular characterization of these populations.
- Line 4: Study of exosomes and gene expression as biomarkers in multiple myeloma and other neoplasms.
