CO26: Epidemiology, quality of life and mhealth

The group focuses primarily on research related to clinical and social epidemiology centered on chronic pain of various causes, analyzing factors associated with the disease, those related to lack of response to treatment, and their consequences on the family, social, and healthcare environment. In addition, we have initiated a line of research based on the use of new m-health technologies to improve health outcomes for patients suffering from chronic pain. The group is committed to developing and applying new data analysis methods to improve the validity of health outcomes. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the group, we have two mathematicians with expertise in complex data analysis techniques; a sociologist with experience in qualitative methodology, focusing on the perspective of the population and the experience of patients; a general health psychologist; a physical therapist who has actively collaborated in the design and development of m-health systems aimed at rehabilitation; and two specialists in Preventive Medicine and Public Health from the UCA, with extensive experience in studies related to the epidemiology of pain and in leading working groups.

Lines of research
  • Line 1: Social and clinical epidemiology of pain. Analysis based on population and clinical studies, the frequency of painful processes, the clinical, environmental, and social factors associated with their onset, and the impact of these processes on patients and their environment.
  • Line 2: Evaluation of measures and Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). Validation of measurement scales and evaluation of the quality of life of patients affected by chronic diseases and the cognitive problems associated with these processes.
  • Line 3: mHealth. Development and evaluation of the effectiveness of multimodal interventions based on new technologies that improve adherence to recommendations and treatments, and the health outcomes and quality of life of patients suffering from pain of different etiologies.
