CO27: Diagnosis in Cardiovascular Medicine: Circulating Biomarkers and Imaging Tools
Our research group specializes in the study of the pathophysiological processes of cardiovascular diseases, particularly dilated cardiomyopathy and atherosclerosis. We are a translational research group composed of clinical and basic researchers. Currently, our research focuses on developing a tool based on the molecular signature of non-coding RNAs in combination with clinical and echocardiographic variables, which will enable the early identification of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy—the most common cause of heart failure, with a prevalence of 1 in 250. Furthermore, we address the clinical need to identify patients with statin intolerance who are at high vascular risk. The primary objective of this line of research is to characterize the molecular mechanisms involved in the muscle damage that occurs in these patients, thereby identifying new therapeutic alternatives to lower elevated cholesterol levels. For both lines of research, we combine research strategies using cellular models (cardiomyocytes, muscle cells), patient studies (involving patients with dilated cardiomyopathy of various etiologies, statin intolerance, and high cardiovascular risk), and the development of ex vivo assays using samples obtained from these patients.

Lines of research
- Line 1: Diagnosis in Cardiovascular Medicine. Circulating biomarkers and imaging tools. The main objective is to develop a tool based on the molecular signature of circulating ncRNAs, in combination with clinical and echocardiographic variables, that will enable the early identification of patients with familial dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) secondary to pathogenic mutations in the LMNA and BAG3 genes, and to differentiate them from DCM cases of other etiologies, such as ischemic or idiopathic DCM.
- Line 2: Identification of New Biomarkers for Statin Intolerance. There is a clinical need to identify biomarkers that can help identify patients with statin intolerance (SI) and high vascular risk who require an alternative treatment to statins to lower their LDL-C levels. In this line of research, it is necessary to define the underlying pathophysiological process in patients with statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS). Therefore, we aim to identify new biomarkers that will serve as innovative diagnostic tools for detecting the population with SI.
