Inflammatory skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis (hereinafter AD and PSO, respectively), have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients who suffer from them, as they affect their daily lives by interfering with household, work, and social activities due to the symptoms they experience. Symptoms can range from pain or itching to functional impairment, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, and/or sexual dysfunction, and they vary depending on the extent and location of the lesions. Delayed diagnosis and treatment can lead to the disease becoming chronic and to the development of sequelae that may be irreversible. Collaboration is therefore essential among the various professionals within our department—dermatologists and nurses—as well as hospital psychologists who provide support to both patients and their families. In many cases, a multidisciplinary consultation is also required, involving specialists in immune-mediated diseases, gastroenterologists, and rheumatologists.

The Dermatology Department at Puerta del Mar Hospital in Cádiz, in collaboration with AbbVie, has developed a project aimed at improving the care pathway that links all the departments involved in the care of patients with inflammatory conditions, as well as strengthening the continuing education of the nursing staff involved—all with the goal of improving our patients’ lives.
