EM15: Health, sport and inflammation

El grupo de Salud, deporte e inflamación es el resultado de la suma de esfuerzos dos instituciones, la Universidad de Cádiz y el Servicio Andaluz de Salud, para establecer un equipo de investigación multidisciplinario cohesionado y con experiencia en el campo específico de salud, el deporte y la inflamación.

El grupo tiene experiencia en el diseño y desarrollo de investigación básica aplicada a la práctica clínica habitual, por ejemplo, los programas de intervención basados en ejercicios para el mejoramiento de las defensas antioxidantes en diferentes poblaciones con mayores efectos oxidativos incluyen la psoriasis.

Los investigadores e investigadoras de cada centro son expertos y expertas y han estado trabajando juntos por muchos años como un grupo cohesionado e integrado, como resultado de lo cual se han derivado las participaciones de congresos internacionales y las publicaciones indexadas.  A este grupo incorporamos investigadores de apoyo con amplia experiencia en la realización de proyectos de investigación sobre monitoreo de fármacos y medición de metabolitos intermedios en procesos inflamatorios, expertos en comorbilidad y consecuencias sistémicas de la inflamación, así como expertos en metodología de investigación.

Lines of research
  • Line 1: Importance of oxidative damage and proinflammatory status in the pathophysiology of prevalent diseases in our environment. The role of oxidative damage and proinflammatory status in the pathophysiology of prevalent diseases is now widely accepted. In fact, markers of oxidative damage and proinflammatory status have been proposed as therapeutic targets. Monitoring these markers could also facilitate the clinical management of these patients.
  • Line 2: Exercise as an adjunctive treatment in the management of oxidative damage and proinflammatory status. There is growing evidence of the usefulness of physical exercise in combating oxidative damage and proinflammatory status. More specifically, aerobic exercise improved oxidative damage by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. At the same time, exercise significantly reduced levels of proinflammatory cytokines and acute phase reactants. Future studies applying exercise-based intervention programs specifically designed for prevalent pathologies in our environment are still needed. Specifying the type of exercise, program duration, number of sessions per week, duration and structure of each session, work intensity, etc., will facilitate reproducibility in any healthcare setting.
  • Line 3: Analysis of adult neurogenesis in the hypothalamus, a key brain region in the regulation of energy metabolism and systemic homeostasis. In this context, we study the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate the proliferation, differentiation, and viability of hypothalamic neural stem cells in response to different stimuli. In particular, we investigate the impact of compounds commonly used in sports, such as different sports supplements, on cellular metabolism and the dynamics of neurogenic niches, especially in the hypothalamus, as well as their impact on inflammation. This approach allows us to explore the neuromodulatory and therapeutic potential of these compounds in relation to physical exercise and neuroendocrine function, contributing to the understanding of brain plasticity in adults and its possible biomedical applications.
