EM15: Health, Sports, and Inflammation

The Health, Sports, and Inflammation Group is the result of a joint effort by two institutions—the University of Cádiz and the Andalusian Health Service—to establish a cohesive, multidisciplinary research Team with expertise in the specific field of health, sports, and inflammation.

The group has experience in the design and conduct of basic research applied to routine clinical practice; for example, exercise-based intervention programs aimed at improving antioxidant defenses in various populations with increased oxidative stress, including those with psoriasis.

The researchers at each center are experts who have been working together for many years as a cohesive and integrated group, a collaboration that has resulted in presentations at international conferences and indexed Publications .  We have added to this group support researchers with extensive experience in conducting research Projects on drug monitoring and the measurement of intermediate metabolites in inflammatory processes, experts in comorbidity and the systemic consequences of inflammation, as well as experts in research methodology.

Lines of research
  • Line 1: The Importance of Oxidative Damage and Proinflammatory Status in the Pathophysiology of Common Diseases in Our Community. The role of oxidative damage and proinflammatory status in the pathophysiology of prevalent diseases is now widely accepted. In fact, markers of oxidative damage and proinflammation have been proposed as therapeutic targets. Furthermore, monitoring these markers could also facilitate the clinical management of these patients.
  • Line 2: Exercise as an adjunctive treatment in the management of oxidative damage and proinflammatory status. There is a growing body of evidence regarding the benefits of physical exercise in combating oxidative damage and proinflammatory status. More specifically, aerobic exercise was found to improve oxidative damage by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. At the same time, exercise significantly reduced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and acute-phase reactants. Future studies implementing exercise-based intervention programs specifically designed for prevalent conditions in our setting are still needed. By specifying the type of exercise, program duration, number of sessions per week, duration and structure of each session, exercise intensity, etc., their reproducibility in any healthcare setting will be facilitated.
  • Line of Research 3: Analysis of adult neurogenesis in the hypothalamus, a key brain region involved in the regulation of energy metabolism and systemic homeostasis. In this context, we study the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate the proliferation, differentiation, and viability of hypothalamic neural stem cells in response to various stimuli. In particular, we investigate the impact of compounds commonly used in sports—such as various sports supplements—on cellular metabolism and the dynamics of neurogenic niches, especially in the hypothalamus, as well as their impact on inflammation. This approach allows us to explore the neuromodulatory and therapeutic potential of these compounds in relation to physical exercise and neuroendocrine function, contributing to our understanding of brain plasticity in adults and its potential biomedical applications.
