EM33: CARTEIA

The CARTEIA group (EM33 group), part of the Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation at Cádiz and based in the Campo de Gibraltar East Health Management Area, is a multidisciplinary group that serves as a leader in translational and organizational research and is focused on transforming the management of chronic conditions. The group’s work is based on converting scientific evidence into technological tools for immediate application, ensuring proactive, equitable, and efficient care that breaks down traditional care silos.

Lines of research
  • Line 1: Intelligent Management of Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolic Conditions and Complex Chronic Diseases. The group develops clinical decision support systems (CDSS) that holistically integrate chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus, established vascular disease, and dyslipidemias (primary and secondary).
  • Line 2: Advanced Technologies and Treatment Adherence in Diabetes. They are researching innovative solutions for diabetes management, including the use of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for the early detection of diabetic foot. Similarly, they are validating biomarkers of treatment adherence, such as glycosuria in patients treated with iSGLT2 inhibitors, using real-world data analysis to optimize clinical outcomes.
  • Line 4: Care, Chronic Wounds, and Dependency. This group focuses its research on the effectiveness of care for people with dependency needs. They develop strategies for the prevention and treatment of chronic wounds and injuries associated with dependency, seeking to maximize the visibility of nursing practice and the efficiency of home and community care.
  • Line 5: Care Effectiveness and Health Outcomes. They evaluate the impact of organizational interventions by measuring health outcomes and reducing clinical variability. They utilize multidisciplinary governance through the Renal Health Commission to ensure the sustainability and transferability of their successful models to other areas of the National Health System.
  • Line 6: Humanization at the End of Life. Research focuses on improving end-of-life care, with a model centered on patient dignity and support for families. We seek to optimize ethical decision-making and the quality of care provided during the course of a terminal illness.
