Esther Berrocoso, Scientific Director of INiBICA, moderates a roundtable discussion at the event to present the Report on Neuroscience Research in Spain 2014–2024

🧠🔬 Spain ranks among the top ten countries worldwide in terms of scientific output in neuroscience, according to a new report by the Spanish Brain Council (CEC), which analyzes the sector’s evolution between 2014 and 2024 and was presented at the Medical Association of Spain (OMC). 🚀 This sustained growth reflects the country’s consolidation as a major player in brain research, in line with the global expansion of biomedicine.

📈 The report, sponsored by INiBICA, the Ramón Areces Foundation, and Merck, shows that public funding for neuroscience has doubled over the past decade, reaching approximately 1.4 billion euros, with a particularly significant increase between 2021 and 2024. 🇪🇺 This increase comes primarily from the public sector and is largely linked to European funds from the Recovery and Resilience Facility.

🗣️ However, the report warns that this growth may not continue in the coming years, which poses significant sustainability challenges. In the words of Dr. Esther Berrocoso, a member of the CEC: “It is essential to promote a strategy that does not leave behind the most complex and stigmatized disorders, and that allows us to advance our understanding and treatment of them.”
