IN53: Pharmacy Analysis Researcher Group (PHARO Group)

The PHARO research group focuses its activities on hospital pharmacy at the University Hospital of Puerto Real, in three key areas: the evaluation and positioning of new medications, medication use/pharmacotherapy monitoring, and medication information. The hospital’s pharmacy has a Drug Information Center, and the group has participated in various collaborative research initiatives within the GÉNESIS (SEFH) and GHEMA-SAFH groups, helping to direct these groups and leading projects such as Projects and the Pharmacotherapy Guide for Hospitals in Andalusia (a collaboration between SAS and SAFH).

His main Publications have been methodological contributions to drug evaluation, such as the Guide to Equivalent Therapeutic Alternatives, a checklist for evaluating indirect comparisons, a method for calculating survival based on area under the curve in Kaplan-Meier analyses, and a checklist for evaluating the applicability of subgroup analysis results, accompanied by an interaction calculator; commentaries on clinical trials and other studies, including letters to the editor in journals such as the N Engl J Med, Am J Cardiol, and Stroke; studies on drug utilization; and numerous evaluations of new drugs, including indirect comparisons and network meta-analyses, using the GÉNESIS methodology, in the development of which he continues to participate.

A collaboration has been established with health economists from the EASP, resulting in the production of several pharmacoeconomic analyses of new drugs.

In addition, the group has received several awards (two first prizes at SEFH conferences and three first prizes at SAFH conferences). It is actively involved in teaching, including annual rotations from other centers in Andalusia and other autonomous communities to learn about the evaluation of new drugs, which also lead to joint Publications .

Lines of research
  • Line 1: Methodological Advances in the Evaluation of Medications and Their Therapeutic Positioning. The goal is to advance the analysis of the benefits, risks, and costs of new medications in areas where there is uncertainty, in order to facilitate their evaluation and introduction into clinical practice based on available evidence and efficiency criteria. This focuses on specific research topics, such as:

╸Analysis of benefit in “time-to-event” survival studies.

╸Evaluation of indirect comparisons and network meta-analyses.

╸Assessment of the clinical applicability of subgroup analyses based on effect-modifying factors.

  • Line 2: Health Outcomes: Analysis of the benefit-risk ratio of medications in clinical practice. The aim is to analyze data on the effectiveness and safety of specific target drugs in real-world clinical practice, based on historical data recorded in DIRAYA across all Andalusian hospitals, in order to maximize the benefit-risk and benefit-cost ratios in pharmacotherapy. Priority is given to the analysis of emerging therapies and targeted therapies based on effect markers. Furthermore, the goal is to leverage the “big data” available in Andalusian registry systems on morbidity and pharmaceutical prescribing, integrate it using valid criteria, and extract information that may be useful in decision-making regarding the appropriate use of therapeutic resources.
  • Line 3: Information on drug safety and pregnancy. The goal is to improve the available information by analyzing and synthesizing the evidence so that it can be useful for clinical decision-making. This is an area with significant potential for improvement due to the lack of sufficiently detailed databases developed according to strict scientific criteria.
