IN55: GIRESMO (Research Group for the Reduction of Stigma in Mental Health)

A research group focused on developing strategies to reduce stigma toward people with mental health issues. Its primary areas of focus are: adolescents in school settings, undergraduate students in health-related disciplines (medicine, psychology, nursing), and the health care professionals themselves who work within the health care system. An additional area of interest is the validation of instruments for objectively measuring stigma in Spanish.

Lines of research
  • Line of Research 1: Development of strategies to reduce stigma toward people with mental illness in the school setting: the “Lo Hablamos” program. The objective of this line of research is to develop intervention programs in the school setting aimed at reducing prejudice and discriminatory attitudes toward people with emotional problems. The interventions are carried out with pre-adolescents (ages 14–16), as this is the critical period when adult stereotypes begin to take shape.
  • Line 2: Development of strategies to reduce stigma toward people with mental illness among medical students—the INDIGO READ project (“The Effectiveness of Responding to Experienced and Anticipated Discrimination (READ) Training for Medical Students”).
  • Line 3: Design and validation of instruments for the objective assessment of stigma toward people with mental illness among adolescents. The objective of this line of research is to develop a set of assessment instruments—validated and adapted to the characteristics of this population—that will allow for the objective evaluation of stigmatizing attitudes toward people with emotional problems.
