🌟 A new recognition from ITEMAS—ISCIII —for the QUIRUCOMP project, which develops carbon-fiber surgical instruments, has prompted a visit by physicians from the Hospital HUPM , and researchers from INiBICA to the CFA at Puerto Real to work on consolidating industrial scaling.
🤝 The event aimed to strengthen ties between the biomedical sector and Cádiz’s cutting-edge industry to advance the QUIRUCOMP project, which stems from a collaboration between Titania, INiBICA, and the UCA, funded by the CTA, following the project’s success in the “Pitch Competition” organized by the ITEMAS Platform of the Andalusian Regional Health Authority ( ISCIII). At that event, QUIRUCOMP was selected as one of three winning initiatives out of 13 finalists from across Spain, in recognition of its high potential for commercialization and its impact on patients.
⚙️ QUIRUCOMP, led by Dr. Pablo Andrés Cano—a Specialist in Traumatology and Osteoarticular Surgery and Principal Investigator for the emerging EM12 group at INiBICA—is proposing a revolution in medical instruments by replacing steel with composite materials such as carbon fiber. This makes it possible to create customized, radiolucent, lighter, and more ergonomic instruments, reducing surgeon fatigue and improving intraoperative precision for safer and more efficient surgeries.
📍 During the visit, the INiBICA delegation was welcomed by Francisco Javier Romalde Quintana, FIDAMC’s Operations Manager at the CFA. Also in attendance were Dr. Borja Sanz, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and researcher with INiBICA’s CO5 consolidated research group, and Paula Castro, a technician with INiBICA’s Office of Innovation and Knowledge Transfer, who is responsible for managing the commercialization of these results.
The visit provided an opportunity to explore the capabilities of the CFA's state-of-the-art machinery, which is key to the validation and future manufacturing of these medical devices.
