Researchers from INiBICA, the UCA, and the National Institute of Occupational Health ( Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar ) of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security ( Cádiz ) have developed an artificial intelligence-based clinical diagnosis support system for the early detection of silicosis caused by exposure to artificial stone dust.
📊 This study is part of the People project, funded by the Regional Ministry of Universities, Research, and Innovation of the Regional Government of Andalusia, and is led by Daniel Sánchez Morillo, coordinator of the Atari group, and Antonio León Jiménez, head of the Pulmonology Department at Puerta del Mar Hospital.
🔍 This tool makes it possible to identify the disease and classify its severity based on chest X-rays, representing “a significant advance” over the limitations of traditional methods. In addition, it improves diagnostic accuracy and incorporates visual interpretation techniques validated by radiologists and pulmonologists, which allows for a better understanding of the model’s automated decisions and facilitates its integration into clinical practice.
🚀 The research findings highlight the value of the system as a predictive tool capable of detecting the disease before it reaches advanced stages, when treatment options are more limited.
