The Urology Department at the University Hospital of Jerez and the Punta de Europa Hospital in Algeciras, which work together, have received a grant from the Andalusian Urology Association for a research project they are conducting on the prevalence of genetic diagnosis in patients with tuberous sclerosis in Andalusia.
The project is led by Dr. Nelson Canales, urologist, and Dr. Elena Reales, molecular biologist.
Tuberous sclerosis is a hereditary disease that affects approximately 1 in every 10,000 births. There are approximately 2 million people affected worldwide. It is characterized by the appearance of benign tumors in different organs of the body, with the kidneys being one of the most affected in adulthood. The kidneys are affected in more than 85% of patients and are the main cause of problems associated with the disease.
In this regard, the main objective of this project is to apply new advanced imaging and mass sequencing tools to develop new treatments for a disease that currently has no cure, thereby improving the quality of life of patients with this rare condition.
The Team is made up of professionals from the Urology Services at Punta de Europa and Jerez Hospital, a center with extensive experience not only in minimally invasive surgery but also in clinical trials, with Publications scientific journals of major international impact, such as New England and The Lancet. In addition, they have extensive research experience in oncological urology, especially in prostate cancer and bladder cancer.
This joint effort by professionals from both centers has enabled the Punta de Europa Hospital to be ready to begin a new phase of high-level clinical research in 2023, participating in an international clinical trial on bladder cancer, which will benefit the entire population of the Campo de Gibraltar region.
It should be noted that these two hospitals in the province of Cádiz a strategic alliance for three years, coordinated by Álvaro Juárez, specialist and head of the Urology Department in Jerez, which allows them to work together as a network to respond to patients' needs.
