INiBICA held an extraordinary meeting of its Governing Council, during which Esther María Berrocoso Domínguez, a full professor at the University of Cádiz, was officially appointed as the institute’s new scientific director for the 2026–2030 term.
👩🔬 Berrocoso is the first woman to hold this position at INiBICA, succeeding Manuel Aguilar upon his retirement. She was also awarded the province’s Flag of Andalusia for Research, Science, and Health this year for, among other achievements, her work as scientific director of INiBICA, which has given the institute a significant boost.
👩🏫 Esther Berrocoso is a full professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the UCA and conducts research in the fields of neuroscience and neuropsychopharmacology. She is currently the principal investigator for INiBICA’s CO9 group, the CTS-510 “ PAIDI ” group, and the Biomedical Research Network Center for Mental Health (CIBERSAM) at the Carlos III Health Institute, where she also serves on the steering committee in the area of training. Prior to her appointment as scientific director, she served as deputy scientific director of INiBICA.
🔬🧠 In the academic and university administration spheres, Berrocoso is the director of the Department of Neuroscience and a member of the UCA Research Committee. She also serves as a member of the Spanish Brain Council.
🤝 His appointment follows the conclusion of a public call for applications that included a two-phase selection process. The first phase focused on evaluating the academic qualifications and research track records of the candidates, while the second phase consisted of the presentation and defense of a strategic plan for the Institute’s future during the new term.
