Cádiz University researcher María del Carmen Camarena has received funding from the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation to carry out a project on the relationship between chronic pain and anxiety.

🔬 The research, which will be conducted in collaboration with INiBICA, will also incorporate cutting-edge techniques such as chemogenetics (DREADDs) to modulate the activity of neurons and astrocytes in a controlled manner—and in both directions—and to observe how these changes affect behavior related to pain and anxiety. 👨🏻👩🏼 Similarly, the project includes sex as a biological variable in order to identify possible differences and move toward more personalized therapeutic strategies.

🚀 The project, titled “Anxiety Induced by Chronic Pain: Decoding Glutamatergic Neuron-Astrocyte Communication in the BLA-ACC Pathway,” builds on the research in neuroscience and mental health being conducted at the UCA and led by Professor Esther Berrocoso.
