Team , a researcher at the institute, in partnership with E-PROCESS-MED, has developed this pioneering initiative that offers rapid and reliable screening

The Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation of the Province of Cádiz (INiBICA) has presented the results of a project for the diagnosis of COVID-19 using artificial intelligence at the Mobile World Congress 2024, which is currently being held in Barcelona.

This pioneering project, funded by the Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs as part of a public-private partnership and developed in collaboration with the company E-PROCESS-MED, was launched to provide rapid and reliable screening of potential COVID-19 patients.

Team , a researcher at INiBICA, in partnership with E-PROCESS-MED, has developed DS&AI, an innovative clinical decision-support system. This system is strategically aligned with the goal of improving patient well-being within Andalusia’s public health care system and fostering the creation of innovations that effectively meet business and social needs.

The technology has been developed over the past two years through a prospective, multicenter clinical study, resulting in an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that streamlines the screening process for patients suspected of having a SARS-CoV-2 infection.

This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Andalusian Health Service (SAS), the Foundation for the Management of Biomedical Research at Cádiz (FCÁDIZ), the University of Cádiz (UCA), and E-PROCESS-MED, features the prominent participation of two principal investigators from INiBICA: Alberto Romero Palacios, Section Chief of the Infectious Diseases Unit at the University Hospital Puerto Real , and José Antonio Girón González, Director of the Unit and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Palliative Care at Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar, as well as a professor at the UCA and this year’s recipient of one of the Flags of Andalusia in the province.

Last Tuesday, Alberto Romero and Levian González, the project’s innovation manager, presented these updates on the project, titled “AI-Based COVID Diagnosis and Screening.”

Participation in the Mobile World Congress 2024, which concludes today, will position INiBICA—according to its director, Julio Ríos de la Rosa —“as an internationally recognized center of innovation and will serve as a meeting point for the Team researchers and professionals in the digital health sector, providing an extraordinary opportunity to explore synergies and contribute to the advancement of innovation in the field of digital health.”
