Dr. Irati Hervás Corpión and Dr. Luis Miguel Valor Becerra, in collaboration with Drs. Irene Iglesias Lozano, Inmaculada Catalina Fernández, and José Luis Gil Salú (professionals from the Neurosurgery and Pathological Anatomy Services at Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar Cádiz), together with other researchers, have identified the induction of histone variants called H3.1 and H3.2 in glioblastoma samples, compared to lower-grade gliomas. Among gliomas, glioblastoma is the most common brain cancer and has the worst prognosis despite current intensive therapeutic interventions. The results of this research, published in the journal Cancers and funded by the INiBICA's own plan and the Carlos III Health Institute - European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020, have been validated in patients in the province of Cádiz open up the possibility of its future implementation as part of the routine diagnosis of gliomas, as well as future research to define its potential as a therapeutic target.
