Regarding the project funded under the 2024 call for grants for public-private partnership- Projects s (State Plan for Scientific, Technical, and Innovation Research 2024–2027, CPP2024-011956), and to mark the start of patient enrollment in the BIATRIA project (Development of a computed tomography-based system for biatrial characterization in atrial fibrillation), a collaborative working session took place today at the headquarters of the Trébol de Corazones Patients’ Association between Team , a researcher with the CO31 GADICOR cardiology group (INiBICA), and representatives of the aforementioned association.

This project, developed jointly by the medical software company ADAS3D Medical S.L. and the Cardiology Department at the Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar Cádiz , aims to improve the treatment of atrial fibrillation through the use of advanced technology. At its core is the development of a CT-based post-processing tool that will enable the precise characterization of patients’ biatrial structures, facilitating a better understanding of the arrhythmic substrate and the design of personalized therapeutic strategies.

During this session, the groundwork was laid for a structured co-creation process, in which the Trébol de Corazones Association actively participates not only as a communication channel but also as a stakeholder involved in defining, validating, and evaluating the project’s results. Specifically, patient representatives helped identify relevant variables related to quality of life, unmet needs, and key aspects for the clinical acceptability of the tool; these contributions were incorporated into the design of the data collection instruments and the impact assessment criteria.

It was also agreed that the association would continue to participate throughout the project cycle, including its involvement in monitoring through co-created surveys, interpreting results from the patient’s perspective, and validating the outputs generated, thereby ensuring that they align with the actual needs of the target population.

This approach allows for the systematic incorporation of the patient’s perspective into technological development, ensuring more results-oriented research with a tangible impact on clinical practice and on improving quality of life.
