Inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome prevents ovarian aging

Researchers at INIBICA, led by Mario Cordero's group, in collaboration with the Chair of Human Reproduction and Genetics at the Institute for the Study of Human Reproductive Biology (INEBIR), the University of Washington, and the University of Glasgow, have demonstrated that the NLRP3-inflammasome complex, a multiprotein complex that regulates inflammation, is involved in ovarian aging and, therefore, in female fertility. The study has been published in the prestigious journal Science Advances.

The study, conducted on young and mature female mice, as well as women with low ovarian reserve, shows that both female mice that have lost fertility due to age and women who, despite being younger, show accelerated aging in their ovaries and low ovarian reserve, have high NLRP3 expression. Furthermore, the research shows that reducing or inhibiting the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, either genetically or through drug treatment, extends female fertility and increases ovarian response.

These results position this inflammasome as a potential new therapeutic target for the treatment of female infertility associated with aging, since NLRP3 inhibition would therefore extend the lifespan of the ovaries and ovarian reserve. In human treatment, it could be an alternative both for women who have decided to become mothers at an advanced age and for those who have low ovarian reserve at an earlier age.
