El pasado sábado 8 de noviembre, INiBICA participó en la 5ª Jornada de Promoción de la Salud “Más allá del diagnóstico: Nuevas Perspectivas”, organizada por la Asociación Conil Contra el Cáncer, un encuentro dedicado a compartir avances y fortalecer la colaboración entre pacientes, profesionales e investigadores. En representación de INiBICA, nuestra compañera Lourdes Rodríguez, Técnica de Gestión de Proyectos, asistió al acto de entrega de la donación que la Asociación realizó al Grupo EM18: Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación en Medicina Materno-Fetal y en Oncología Ginecológica, liderado por el investigador Dr. Juan Jesús Fernández Alba, Jefe de Servicio de Obstetricia y Ginecología del Hospital Universitario Puerto Real, que desarrolla una destacada línea de investigación vinculada a la oncología ginecológica. Esta aportación representa un valioso impulso para la investigación biomédica, y un ejemplo inspirador del compromiso y la generosidad del movimiento asociativo de pacientes. During the session, the new INiBICA 2026–2030 Strategic Plan will be presented, addressing its main lines of action, challenges, and opportunities. 🧬CAR therapies have made it possible to achieve cures for tumors that previously had no treatment options. However, limitations remain, such as toxicities, relapses mediated by antigenic escape, and challenges related to manufacturing, cost, and access. ⚙️To overcome these barriers, we present a modular system that separates a universal signaling module—responsible for activating the therapeutic cells—from one or more interchangeable recognition modules designed to identify tumors, allowing the specificity to be reoriented without having to reengineer the entire cell. 🧩The system allows for the targeted co-assembly of multiple targets with a single signaling scaffold, reducing the risk of antigenic escape by enabling the modification of recognition modules when changes occur in the tumors. The ability to modulate the presence of complete receptors by discontinuing the infusion of recognition modules will also allow for the control of toxicity and the depletion of therapeutic cells. 🌍The platform is also compatible with universal products, enabling the large-scale production of healthy donor cells with a common signaling module and the subsequent retrofitting of these cells with different recognition modules according to each patient’s needs. These universal CARs can be rapidly prepared for different tumor targets, with the ability to target multiple targets and fine-tune therapeutic activity to enhance the safety, efficacy, and accessibility of these therapies, enabling us to reach all patients in a timely manner. 🔬This innovation, which aims to improve safety (toxicity control), sustained efficacy (by mitigating antigenic escape and “fatigue” of therapeutic cells), and accessibility (standardized manufacturing of the signaling module and rapid “retrofitting” with recognition modules), is protected by a European patent pending, supplemented by Publications in two types of tumors—multiple myeloma and B-cell neoplasms—confirming the system’s versatility and its potential for patient-specific customization. 🔗 More information: Instagram

⏳ Twenty-five years ago, the University of Cádiz welcomed its first researchers from the Ramón y Cajal program, a national initiative created in 2000 to attract and retain scientific talent in Spain. Since then, the institution has seen 47 scientists pass through its doors who, thanks to this program, have been able to establish their professional careers and strengthen cutting-edge lines of basic and applied research. 🌟Among the pioneers is our colleague Carmen Castro, Principal Investigator (PI) of the “ CO5: r Neurogenesis and Neuroregeneration” Group at INiBICA and in the Department of Biomedicine, Biotechnology, and Public Health at the UCA. Her appointment in 2003 as one of the program’s first recipients not only provided an opportunity to stabilize her career but also gave a boost to biomedical research within the Cádiz-based institution. 🚀 The Ramón y Cajal program has been key to attracting talent back to Spain and creating a solid scientific foundation at Spanish universities, which has helped consolidate leading research groups and pave the way for new generations of scientists, demonstrating how commitment and excellence can transform the future of science within the university setting. 🔗 More information: UCA || Instagram
